Chronic diseases: a burden for Europe

They are the evil of the 21st century. Chronic diseases represent about 9 in 10 deaths in Europe, that is to say about 4 million people.

From a socioeconomic point of view, these pathologies represent between 70% and 80% of global health expenses, about 700 billion euros. Almost one active worker in four is considered as suffering from a chronic disease.

Yet, some of these pathologies (diabetes and heart diseases) can be avoided, or if not, delayed by acting on our way of living: prevention is definitely the key. Four high-risk behaviours are identified and well documented: smoking, alcoholism, poor diet and sedentariness. As for the other chronic diseases, technical progresses or medico-social assistance enable a better care.

For instance, CHRODIS-JA program supports the good practices exchanges between European cities and regions, regarding the fight against chronic diseases, health promotion and chronic diseases, comorbidity and diabetes prevention. HASIC project is aimed at promoting a healthy way of living (balanced diet, physical exercises, moderate alcohol drinking, and social life) among seniors in Europe. Finally, EConDA program is helping EU member countries to develop, select and implement more efficient and profitable policies so as to improve chronic diseases prevention and their impact on populations with the highest rates of early deaths due to chronic diseases, reducing in the same time, health inequities.

Next April 21st, the European Commission will organize a conference about chronic diseases and wishes to favour the European cooperation. The European Commission will state about its Health Policy.

Located in the heart of the Landes’ forest, Purextract® offers a large range of food ingredients containing high rate of active molecules : sterols, secoiridoids (Oleuropein) and above all OPCs (Procyanidolic Oligomers) extracted from Les Landes pine bark (Pinus Pinaster), and which efficiency has been proved for heart diseases prevention (systolic blood pressure, oxidized LDL, cholesterol and apoprotein).

Oligopin® contains more than 67% of low molar mass OPC, bioavailable in the human body. It is the fruit of a unique vegetal extraction technic, implemented in 1970 by DRT.

To be continued next June 7th for a complete file about chronic diseases prevention.
