How to make a promise and…keep it ?

Nutricosmetic market allegations

Only clear and sustantiated scientific evidence may appear n the label. The EFSA is responsible for checking the validity of allegation requests and whether or not to authorize their use.

In several cases however, the agency did not consider itself competent to express its opinion, considering that some allegations were outside the area of competence defined by the regulations. When asked, Synadiet offers an interesting enlightment: “A number of aspects leads to the conclusion that beauty promises dos not fall within the scope of Regulation (EC) N° 1924/2006 on nutrition and health claims made on foods. These aspects are regulatory, scientific, legal, economic and policy-related.

Promises referring to beauty are not defined in the European regulation (EC) n° 1223/2009

Beauty promises only deal with improving the appearance and not the function.

The EFSA’s guidelines “guidance on the Scientific requirements for Health claims related to bone, joints, skin and oral health ” define teh scope of Regulations (EC) N° 1924/2006 for claims relating to the function of the skin. According to the EFSA, claims that relate to “the maintenance of normal structure, hydration, elasticity or appearance of the skin” fall outside the scope of the Regulation, since they do not relate to a physiological function of the body.

Beauty relate to physical appearance, in particular the appearance of the skin, hair and nails, and not to a function of the body. These are beauty promises, with beauty benefits but never with health benefits. Lacking a clear definition of a beauty claim, these claims cannot fall within the scope of Regulation.

That is not to say promises only bind these who believe in them !

These who make claims should also ensure compliance with several rules. Claims  on the improvement of the appearance of the skin, hair, body shapes have to be based on scientific evidences ( clinical studies).

Cosmythic® kept its “promises” on skin beauty

Cosmythic® is an active ingredient containing pine OPC ( pinus pinaster ). Only low molecular weight molecules were preserved during the plan extraction process ( crystal pure© technology ). By giving Comythic® a bioavailability, much greater than that of crude pine bark extracts, they play an essential role in the active mechanism, in the human body.

A double-blind study, at random vs placebo, on a panel of 34 subjects, demonstrated the effectiveness of Cosmythic® on skin beauty, in a 100mg per day dosage.

Results on skin lightening (measured by Spectrocolorimeter® and Mexameter®)
  • Cosmythic® helps reduce the intensity of dark spots by 6.6% after 28 days of treatement and by 12.5% after 56 days.
  • Cosmythic® reduces pigmentation of the skin by 7.5% after 56 days of treatment
Results on mechanical properties of the skin (measured by Cutometer®)
  • Cosmythic® improves skin firmness by 8.2% after 28 days of treatment
  • Cosmythic® improves skin fatigability* by 9.7% after 28 days of treatment

*fatigability is the ability of the skin to retain its mechanical properties after several solicitations. This is a good indicator of “good health” in the elastin-colllagen network that forms the basis of supportive tissue. Cosmythic® activates the genes which are responsable for Collagen synthesis.

  • Cosmythic® reduces the number of wrinkles by 15% after 28 days of treatment
  • Cosmythic® reduces the depth of deep wrinkles ( > 110 μm) by 7% after 28 days of treatment
